Elementary and high school students are eligible for a monthly reduced pass or strips of reduced-fare tickets. To use a reduced pass or tickets, students will need to get a GRT photo ID card.
Photo ID cards
Photo ID cards can be purchased at the Charles or Ainslie Street terminals. ID cards can be purchased at any time and expire each year on September 30.
Students will need to show proof of student status when purchasing a new ID.
- High school students should being a current student card, or a school timetable and identification.
- Elementary student should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Monthly reduced pass
The monthly reduced pass offers elementary and high school students unlimited rides on GRT for one calendar month.
The monthly reduced pass is on sale from the 20th of the preceding month until the 15th business day of the current month.
Monthly reduced passes are available at the Charles and Ainslie Street terminals, most Sobeys and Zehrs stores across the region, and a number of retail locations. You will need your GRT photo ID to buy a student monthly pass.
Note: GRT will not refund or replace monthly transit passes for any reason. The pass is non-refundable and not transferrable.
Reduced fare tickets
Elementary and high school students can buy strips of reduced fare tickets at a savings of 29 per cent off the cash fare.
Reduced tickets are available at the Charles and Ainslie Street terminals, most Sobeys and Zehrs stores across the region, and a number of retail locations.
SunOne summer bus pass
Elementary and secondary students can get the SunOne student summer bus pass, which can be used from July 1 to August 31.
High school term pass
The high school term pass is valid for unlimited travel on GRT buses during the five-month term of the pass.
Fall term: September 1 - January 31
Winter/spring: February 1 - June 30
Note: Eligibility for this pass is determined by Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region (STSWR).

A $5.00 charge applies when you pick up the Term Pass. Cash, debit, Visa, Master Card and American Express only. No cheques.
How to use a reduced monthly pass
As you board the bus, show your GRT Student ID card when using a reduced ticket or monthly pass. Your pass should have the serial number of your photo ID card inscribed with ink, ballpoint or felt marker.
Transit tax credit
The cost of monthly student passes can be claimed for a federal transit tax credit. Be sure to keep expired passes as proof of purchase. GRT does not issue receipts.
