Safety and Security

Grand River Transit is committed to passenger safety. We have put safety programs in place to make travel with us a great experience.

Our dedicated Transit Supervisors and security team offers security, customer assistance and enforcement services throughout the system.  We need your participation in our safety initiatives to make all our efforts a success.

Travel Safely with these tips:

  • Always be at your stop 5 minutes before the bus arrives.
  • Carry a personal device or paper pocket schedule with you.
  • Let someone know where you are going.
  • Check the weather report and dress appropriately.
  • During snowy or icy weather expect delays. Road condistions affect all traffic.
  • Be prepared for unforeseen events such as missing a bus, or a bus breaking down.
  • Carry only what is necessary.
  • Consider using an over the shoulder bag/purse since they are more difficult to leave behind.
  • Keep your belongings in sight.
  • Keep money, listening devices and cell phones out of sight in public places.
  • If you feel unsafe for any reason sit near the front of the bus or tell the bus operator about your concerns.
  • Always report any suspicious behaviour, unsafe conditions, or abandoned bags/packages or damaged bus shelters/stops to GRT staff either in person or by calling 519 585 7555.

Safety at Terminals and Major Transfer Points

Safety is not only important while riding the bus. You can be safe waiting for the bus at the stop or in the terminals. You can also be safe using our equipment and services appropriately!

Remember, safety starts with you! Take care at all times and stay alert.

Request Stop

In the evening, riders travelling alone can request an alternate stop location along a bus route. Operators will do their best to accommodate requests to exit the bus at a stop that is not a regular bus stop.

The bus operator will not go off route to satisfy a request. However, the operator will select the safest stop location closest to the requested area.
