Big changes are coming to Grand River Transit's bus network.

ION light rail service will start June 21, 2019. On June 24, 2019, GRT buses will change to connect to ION. New bus stops will be added, and other bus stops will be removed.

Route changes and maps

The routes listed below have significant changes planned for ION launch. Click on each route to see a map, description of how it's changing, where it will take you and how often it will run. All routes are included in the Google map above.

301 ION Light Rail

ION is the Region's new rapid transit line, and will travel between Fairway Station and Conestoga Station. ION will form the backbone of GRT's new transit network and provide a frequent, reliable and convenient way to travel throughout the region. ION stations will have connections to express and/or local buses. At Fairway Station, ION will continue into Cambridge as ION bus.

ION Bus will travel between Fairway Station and the Ainslie Street Terminal via Highway 8, Highway 401, Hespeler Road, and Water Street. This limited-stop express route would include new buses with enhanced features. At Fairway Station, ION will continue into Kitchener-Waterloo as ION light rail.

Route 1 would be revised to connect with ION in downtown Kitchener at Queen and Frederick stations.
Route 2 Stirling

The extended Route 2 would travel along Westheights Drive, Greenbrook Drive, Stirling Avenue, and Ottawa Street North between the Forest Heights area and Stanley Park Mall.

Revised to travel along Westmount Road and Bleams Road between University Avenue and Fairway Station. Route 12 buses would continue service as Route 8 at the University/King intersection.

The revised Route 14 would travel between Conestoga Station and the employment area around Bathurst Drive. Service to the employment area around Kumpf Drive would be provided by the new Route 19.

Route 16 Strasburg-Belmont

The extended Route 16 would continue to Uptown Waterloo via Highland Road, Belmont Avenue and King Street. 15-minute service would be provided between Uptown Waterloo and the intersection of Strasburg/Ottawa during peak. Service would be retained on Hoffman Street.

All Route 19 buses would serve Hazel Street and Parkside Drive. Route 19 buses would continue service as Route 30 at University of Waterloo Station.

Route 30 Ring Road

The new Route 30 would travel in a clockwise direction around the University of Waterloo. Route 19 buses entering UW Station would continue as Route 30 service.

Route 30 will begin service when the new transit plaza at University of Waterloo Station is built. Until that time, service on Ring Road will be provided by routes 9, 13, and 19.

Route 76 will be extended to serve Old Carriage Drive.

Route 91 Late Night Loop
Route 91 would be replaced by new late night trips on key corridor routes.

Route 92 would be discontinued. Service would be provided by existing routes along University, Columbia and Fischer-Hallman corridors.
Route 116 College Express
Route 116 would be replaced by the extension of the Route 201 to Conestoga College.
Route 201 Fischer-Hallman iXpress

Extended to travel along Homer Watson Boulevard, Manitou Drive, Block Line Road, Fischer-Hallman Road, Columbia Street, and King Street North between Conestoga College Doon Campus and Conestoga Mall. This crosstown express route would connect to ION stations in addition to the 202, 203, 204 and 205 iXpress.
