ION light rail is now in service. There are a few things to keep in mind whether you're driving, cycling or walking near ION.

  • Follow the signs and signals 
    • Some intersections have been modified. Follow new restrictions (e.g. no left turn) and follow all signs.
  • Stay off the tracks
    • Tracks are for trains. Never stop or park anywhere on the light rail tracks, even just for a moment. Any vehicle stopped or parked on the tracks will be ticketed or towed.
  • Stay alert
    • ION trains are quiet. ION runs on electricity and may not always be heard against typical street noise.

Motorists

When driving near ION, motorists are reminded...

  • ION trains travel in their own lane and have the right of way.
  • The rules of the road haven't changed, but there are new signs and signals to follow.
  • Always check your blind spot before crossing the light rail tracks and never turn in front of a train.
  • Never stop or park anywhere on the light rail tracks.
  • ION trains are quiet and may not be heard over other traffic so look both ways before crossing the light rail tracks.
  • At intersections with railway gates, wait for the signals to stop flashing and the railway gates are up before you start driving again.

If an emergency vehicle approaches where there is not enough space to pass, drive forward until you are in a safe position to pull over and allow the emergency vehicle to pass. Find out more about emergency vehicles

Cyclists

When cycling near ION, cyclists are reminded...

  • To never cycle on the rapidway.
  • ION trains are quiet and may not be heard over other traffic, look both ways before crossing the light rail tracks.
  • The rules of the road haven't changed, but there are new signs and signals to follow.
  • To always check your blind spot before crossing the light rail tracks.
  • To cross the tracks at a right angle, if the tracks are at an angle to the road you may need to use a full lane to cross.

Pedestrians

When walking near ION, pedestrians are reminded...

  • To look both ways and only cross at crosswalks.
  • ION trains are quiet and may not be heard over other traffic so look both ways before crossing the light rail tracks.
  • To follow the pedestrian signals to cross the light rail tracks at crosswalks.
  • To wait for the railway crossing signals to stop flashing and the barrier to be completely up before crossing the light rail tracks. 
    • Never go underneath or around a railway gate.
  • To never stand on the light rail tracks.
