Stay safe around ION trainsYellow diamond sign with train your brain text

Testing is now progressing to all areas of the ION route. Here's how to stay safe around ION:

  • Obey signage
    • Some intersections have been modified. Please follow any new restrictions and please obey all signage.
  • Stay off the tracks
    • Tracks are for trains. Never stop or park anywhere on the LRT tracks. Any vehicle stopped or parked on the LRT tracks will be ticketed or towed.
  • Stay alert
    • ION trains run on electricity and may not always be heard against typical street noise. Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists should treat ION trains with the same caution as any other vehicle. Always cross at designated crossings and stay alert by not being distracted by mobile devices or headphones.
 Pedestrians

Stay safe while traveling near the ION route:

  • Look both ways and only cross at designated crossings
  • Treat ION trains with the same caution as any other vehicle. They may not always be heard against typical street noise so make sure you look both ways before crossing light rail tracks
  • Continue to follow your own pedestrian signals and never step in front of a train
  • Stay alert - always look up from your smartphone and remove your headphones before crossing light rail tracks

 Cyclists
  • Look both ways and only cross at designated crossings
  • Some intersections have been modified; please follow new restrictions (e.g. no left turns in some areas)
  • Treat ION trains with the same caution as any other vehicle, they may not always be heard against typical street noise so make sure you look both ways before cycling across light rail tracks
  • Always cross the tracks at a right angle
    • If the tracks are at an angle to the road you may need to use a full lane to cross. Remember, in Ontario, bicycles are considered vehicles and cyclists have the same rights and duties as motorists. For more cycling tips, please visit Ontario's Guide to Safe Cycling.
  • Never ride along the light rail tracks
  • Stay alert - continue to use the correct hand signals and please follow the rules of the road around the ION route

 Motorists
  • ION trains travel in their own lane
  • The rules of the road haven't changed, but there are new signs and signals to be aware of (see the new signs below). Please obey new signage
  • Some intersections have been modified; please follow new restrictions (i.e. no left turns in some areas)
  • Treat ION trains with the same caution as any other vehicle, they may not always be heard against typical street noise so make sure you look both ways before driving across light rail tracks
  • Never stop or park anywhere on the light rail tracks - any vehicle stopped or parked on the tracks will be ticketed or towed
