GRT pilot helps community agencies reduce transportation barriers

Waterloo Region – Grand River Transit is launching a discounted 2‑ride fare card pilot to help eligible community agencies in Waterloo Region reduce transportation barriers for clients.

As part of the 2026 budget process, Regional Council approved $25,000 for this year’s pilot program.

Starting April 14, all eligible agencies in Waterloo Region can purchase up to 250 cards at a rate of $3. The price is reduced from the regular $5 cost. Cards are sold on a first come; first served basis until the $25,000 budget is reached.

“Reducing barriers to transit creates more options and opportunities for residents to stay connected,” said Regional Coun. Colleen James, Chair of the Sustainability, Infrastructure and Development Committee. “Investing in support programs and local agencies enriches and strengthens our community.”

Cards have a two-year expiration; no exchanges or refunds are available.
