Riding the train

We have several tools to help you plan your trip, let you know what you can bring on transit and we offer travel training. For information regarding accessibility and priority seating visit our accessibility webpage.

When riding ION light rail, pay your fare before you board and keep your proof of payment with you. Fare inspectors may ask to see your proof of payment.

Approaching the train

  • Follow pedestrian signals.
  • Only cross the tracks at designated crossings and remember to look both ways.
  • ION trains are quiet and may not be heard against typical street noise. Remove headphones, look up from devices and listen for signals.
  • Never cross the tracks when lights are flashing or crossing arms are down. Wait for the signals to stop and the barrier to be completely up before crossing.
  • Never go underneath or around a railway gate.
  • Never stand on or walk along the light rail tracks.

Boarding the train

  • Wait behind the yellow platform edge for the train to come to a complete stop. The train doors will line up with the black sections of the platform edge when the train stops.
  • Stand back and wait for other riders to exit before boarding.
  • Mind the gap between the station platform and the train.
  • To open the doors, press the red button on the door when the light turns green.
  • Allow riders with mobility devices to board first. Riders with mobility devices, bikes, strollers, service animals or other large items should board through the two middle doors.
  • Don’t hold the train doors open. Preventing the train from leaving by holding the doors open may result in a fine.

Riding the train

  • Once you’ve boarded, move away from the doors to make room for other people. Ensure the aisles are clear.
  • If you’re standing, hold on to a bar or strap while the train is moving.
  • Don’t lean against the bellows in the articulated section of the train.
  • Each upcoming station will be announced and shown on the passenger displays. The train will stop at each station, so no need to signal your stop.

Safety on board ION

To ensure your safety and the safety of others, anyone using our services must follow GRT’s rules for riding.

In the event of an emergency, press the yellow emergency strip. An alarm will sound. To speak to the operator, use the intercom located next to the doors or in the priority seating area. Emergency call boxes are also available at all ION light rail stations.

  • Use marked crosswalks to exit the station.

Disruptions to ION service

If there is a significant disruption along the ION route, bus shuttles will carry passengers between ION stations.
